My own Arcade Cabinet

I just ordered an arcade cabinet kit! I always wanted one as a kid, but that was always way too expensive to justify. Well, now my son is old enough to start playing arcade games too, so I decided to get one for us to play two player games on.

There are a number of different ways to approach a project like this, but I decided to order this kit. For starters, you need to decide if you even need a self-contained cabinet. I decided I really want one, but for many people it makes more sense to have just the arcade control deck and plug that into your TV, in which case you want something more like this or this. When choosing a kit also consider how DIY you want it to be; these bartop kits seem like a good budget option, but you’re also gonna do a lot more work. Checkout these build instructions to get a sense of what I mean.

The cabinet I ordered is a bit shorter than a standard arcade machine, and I might get the riser for it in a couple years, but for now shorter is perfect so my son my son can play. I have to get a monitor separately, but it comes with a Raspberry Pi loaded with RetroPie.

Incidentally, the reason I ordered this now is to celebrate getting a new job with Qualcomm Game Studios. I guess that tells you what sort of person I am: someone who celebrates a new job by building an arcade machine 😛
